Colour & B&W illustrations. 8vo (6 1/2" x 9"), pictorial brown paper with white lettering and triple ruled boarders over boards with depiction of little girl fishing, illustrated with 8 glossy plates in colour and 25 illustrations in black & white, pictorial dust jacket (unclipped) with delineation of mounted knights fighting, 47, [48] pages. Michael Ayrton (1921 - 1975) was a brilliantly talented English Renaissance man: artist and writer, renowned as a painter, printmaker, sculptor and designer; also as a critic, broadcaster and novelist. Among important artists, Ayrton discusses Nicholas Hillyarde, Inigo Jones, William Hogarth, George Romney, Thomas Gainsborough, William Blake, Henri Fuseli, Samuel Palmer, Stanley Spencer, Aubrey Beardsley, Augustus John, Wyndham Lewis, and Graham Sutherland. Cloth tight and without annotations; very light foxing on pastedowns but not to illustrations; light uniform age-toning. Dust jacket unclipped with fraying at edges. Bump to mid fore-edge of front cover and wear to corners.
