About This Item

London: Printed for the author and sold by Sherwood, Jones and Co.;FW. Wetton; etc., 1824-7. First Edition. Half Calf. Very Good. 8vo. 24 by 15.5 cm. 194 hand-colored plates. The plates are sensitively and sublimely realized and impart something visually that no photograph of the many insect species represented here could ever achieve. Hand-written two page exigesis on preserving specimens on two preliminary blanks of first volume, along with an insert piece of scrap paper with two sketches of insects -- we would consider these accretions a plus. Calf on spines with cracking, rubbing and wear, with a loss of one spine label, and the gilt detailing on one compartment of one volume is now lost with plain calf repair. All the volumes have had joint repairs, and on the first volume, one can see shadow remnants of tape which clearly was once used to hold boards. Notwithstanding these issues, the contemporary bindings remain handsome and should please most sensibilities. All text blocks are tight, and the interiors are generally clean, with only the most occasional light soiling.
