E. Ballard, L Hawes et al, 1775. Hardcover. Acceptable. 1775. No Edition Remarks. 387 pages. Fully bound in brown leather with raised spine strips and gilt lettering on red spine label. Unpaginated table of diseases to rear. Armorial bookplate of Thomas Allen to front pastedown. Pages are moderately tanned and foxed throughout, heavier at end-papers, paste-downs and text-block edges. Ex Libris plate to front pastedown. Previous owner's inscription to front and rear free end-papers. Heavy cracking at the hinges with exposed binding material. Binding remains reasonably firm. Slight pencil mark to one page of herb index. Boards have heavy edge-wear with bumping to corners, crushing to spine ends and rub wear all over. Leather is rubbed with peeling, loss, and staining. Split to front hinge at the top of spine. Boards are bowed. Gilt lettering is bright and clear with some distortion to text and label beginning to loosen. Small stain to text block long edge.

London: J. Barker (et al), 1790. Hardcover. Very good. Octavo, 348pp. Date taken from ESTC (N7552). A very good copy in contemporary full sheep, with raised bands and modest gilt rules to spine. Outer joints aprtially cracked, but a sound, complete copy with no restoration. Later printed bibliographical notes pasted to the front endpapers. Some leaves trimmed rather close to the bottom edge, but never approaching any text. Corners moderately worn. An entirely unrestored copy with no sophistications; uncommon thus.

Churchill, 1703. [xv],386,[8]pp. Orig. calf, raised spine bands, red morocco spine label, gilt-chamfered edges. Front outer hinge tender, wear to spine ends, small chip to front upper free corner, light toning, else very good. With the bookplate of Harvey Cushing. Cushing (1869-1939) was a neurosurgeon, pathologist, writer, and draftsman. A pioneer of brain surgery, he was the first exclusive neurosurgeon and the first person to describe Cushing's disease. The most famous herbal in English, first published in 1652 and commonly known as 'Culpeper's Herbal'.
