About This Item

Edinburgh: T. Werner Laurie Ltd., 1921. Leather. Good. 9" by 6". None. A limited fifth-edition of George Moore's novel, first published 1916. With an ink dedication, consistent with other examples of the author's handwriting, under which is written in pencil "in George Moore's hand"; . The Brook Kerith is a radical retelling of the story of Jesus and Early Christianity. Moore imagines Jesus surviving his crucifixion and re-evaluating his earlier beliefs, ultimately arriving at a non-religious credo of tolerance influenced by the ancient Greek philosophers. George Moore (1852 - 1933) was an Irish writer, commonly regarded as the first modern Irish novelist. Whilst living in Paris in the 1870s, Moore spent time among leading artists and writers of the day and was strongly influenced by French realism, as typified by the works of Emile Zola. The naturalistic style Moore adopted in turn influenced many English-language authors, notably James Joyce. In a half-cloth binding with marbled boards. Externally sound, though a little rubbed with some marks to boards. Hinges are slightly strained. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are clean and bright throughout. Many pages uncut. Good
