About This Item
Limited edition, number 35 of 150 copies—"of which one hundred are slip-cased, and fifty are boxed and include an original [matted] print", signed by Davidson. The print, which Davidson has signed on verso, is tipped on the matte board and laid in the box. All fine condition.
First book-length printing of these images taken by Davidson in 1959, with some images published at that time in Esquire. This edition includes Davidson's brief essay about the project as well as an autobiographic piece by "Bengie," one of the members of the "Jokers," here a survivor at 55, working as a drug counselor. The images and Bengie's story remind me of Tony Curtis' first role as Mitch, a member of the Brooklyn "Dukes" in "City across the River" (1949). The landscape and the fashions seemed almost the same ten years later. The original print included in this edition is of Mike' Tattoo Shop in Coney Island, where Bengie received, erroneously as it were, a tattoo reading "Stinky." Forty years later he had it covered up with another image. No fella wants to be called "Stinky."
