No markings, spine slant, back cover is slightly bowed, Good used copy. 17 x 10,5 cm, brown cloth with gold title, milky brown end papers, xii, 302pp, index [2]pp publisher's ads. There is apreface dated 184 in which the author says that he was invited by Her Majesty's Commissioners of the Internastional exhibition to deliver a course of lectures on Cookery. One of the exhibits that year was Food, and it was thought that this section might be made more instructive by lectures. There are lectures on Early English Food and Cooking, Houses for the Working Classes, On Stock Pots and Soups, Mistresses and Servants, Hashes and Stews, The Function of Food, Cooking Australian Meat, Frying, Sauces, The Education of Girls, etc. There are recipes included with the book but the author says that these were taken from the workd of Gouffe, and from Mrs Harrison of the Cookery School.
