Rare first edition of a well-known book by William Edward Webb, a paleontologist and land man who worked for the Kansas Pacific railroad encouraging settlement of the Western United States, particularly Western Kansas and Colorado. The main portion of the book discusses all sorts of adventures, including details of buffalo hunting, Indian culture, and travel through to the west.
The Appendix has detail about homestead laws, how to prove up a land grant, costs of preparation and farming, how to hunt the buffalo, the appeal of the lifestyle--the rivers, the terrain, the climate of the plains, the supply of lumber...
