About This Item

London: Jonathan Cape, 1968 . First edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Very Good Indeed. 8" by 5". None. A signed, first edition of this entertaining play by Brigid Brophy, inscribed by the author to fellow writer Stephen Vizinczey. First edition, in the publisher's original cloth, with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Inscribed by the author, to fellow writer Stephen Vizinczey and his wife. With 'Gloria and Stephen with Brigid's love', to the front endpaper. Brigid Brophy was a british author and critic who was also an influential campaigner for social reform, including for vegetarianism, animal rights and equality. 'The Burglar' uses conventions of farce to shine light on two different moralities. A burglar breaks into what he thinks is an empty flat, but he is instead trapped in an erotic situation and confusing misunderstanding. From the library of Hungarian-Canadian author Stephen Vizinczey, best known for his 'In Praise of Older Women', and 'An Innocent Millionaire'. His writing was praised by the likes of Graham Greene and Anthony Burgess, describing his fiction as social epics which breathe hope in a corrupt world. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original, unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, excellent, with very light bumping to the head of the spine and a touch of fading to the extremities. Ink inscription to the recto of the front endpaper. Dust wrapper is very good, with light edge wear and sunning to the spine. Internally, firmly bound. Small clips to each fly leaf. Pages bright and clean. Near Fine
