This is a very scarce antique children's fairy book - "BUTTERFLY FAIRY BOOK." Circa 1906 presumed 1st Edition (the book is not dated, but is listed in the publisher's 1906 "Catalogue of Books"); Dean & Son; London. Although there is no author stated, the "Catalogue of Books" lists A.R. Montalba as the author. The book features 24 illustrations by Richard Doyle. Gilt top edge. Decorative floral end papers. There are 20 fairy tales in all including "Eastward of the Sun and Westward of the Moon" and "Snow-White and Rosy-Red." There are 20 pages of advertisements at the back of the book (most are illustrated).
Condition:
Some fading of the blueish cloth color on the covers; light staining to the back cover; light soiling to the front cover and spine; fraying to the top and bottom edges of the spine; tiny cloth tears at the top 2 corner tips, larger cloth tears to the bottom 2 corner tips. Tight binding. Crack at front hinge between the end papers. The pages are in very good condition - mostly clean with occasional foxing (heavier at the beginning of the book up to page 6, and on the last few pages of the book) and some random stains and ink smudges. Inscription dated 1909 written in pen on the front end paper...no other writing found. Small foxing spots on the long and bottom edges of the text block. Small cloth tear at the bottom edge of the front cover.
