Amsterdam: Hendrick Doncker. unbound. very good. Sea chart. Engraving with hand coloring. 24" x 18.5". In very good condition. Beautiful and rare Dutch sea chart centered on the Arabian Sea featuring the horn of Africa, Arabia and the Malabar coast of India. Mounted on larger sheet for atlas tip in. Hendrick Doncker (1626-1699) was a book seller, instrument maker, hydrographer and publisher based in Amsterdam and active during the mid-17th century. He was perhaps most famous for his publication of sea charts and nautical atlases, which he produced based on his own work, rather than copying them from earlier cartographers. His unique publications were also known for their accuracy as he often supplemented and revised his maps with the latest discoveries. Doncker also collaborated with Pieter Goos and Anthonie Jacobsz to produce the 'De Zeespiegal' pilot atlas. Upon his death, his map plates were acquired by Johanned Van Keulen. This is a beautiful example of his unique work.

Description:
Amsterdam, c. 1678. Very Good; lower margin extended.. Notes: This is the second state of Doncker's map, first published in 1678 in his 'Zee-Atlas', which makes one improvement on the first state: it depicts the Grand Bank as much larger and indicates depth soundings. (Kershaw Pl. 114)The map, like the majority of Dutch maps of the Canadian maritimes of the era, is nearly exactly copied from Van Loon's map. Van Loon in turn relied heavily on earlier Dutch sources, including Gerritz and Blaeu, which accounts for the shape of Newfoundland and Cape Breton. The omission of Prince Edward Island is due to a heavy reliance on Champlain's maps of the Canadian mainland, which did not depict the island. , Size : 430x520 (mm), 16.93x20.47 (Inches), Coloring: Hand Colored in Outline, Reference: Kershaw Entry 180 & 183 and Plate 114, Category: Maps Sea Chart; Maps Canada East; Maps United States New England;
