About This Item

Alexandria, Virginia:: Time-Life Books, 1982.. Reprint Edition.. Hardbound . BINDING/CONDITION: from a uniformly bound series: dark brown bonded leather with gilt text, stamped decoration on the front cover, all edges gilt, ribbon place marker; Very Good+ condition.. 8vo (8.5 inches tall) . Marbled endpapers. Description: Includes a few black and white illustrations. This is a volume from the Time-Life Classics of the Old West series. Each volume in the series has been photographically reproduced from the original edition. In the spring of 1851, nine members of the Oatman family set out for California with a group under the leadership of James C Brewster. Brewster believed that the Latter-day Saints in Utah had erred in their interpretation of the chosen land, and was headed to California on the old Santa Fe Trail. Seventy miles from California the party was attacked. The entire Oatman family was killed, with the exception of a boy mistakenly left for dead, and two girls, Ann and Olive. The girls were taken into captivity and sold to tribes further west. The author's narrative vividly describes the Oatman family, their fateful journey, the massacre, captivity, and the surviving brother's long search for his sisters. Olive Oatman's account of her captivity provided one of the earliest descriptions of life in Indian villages of the Southwest. Originally published in 1857, this Time-Life edition reprints in its entirety the text of the enlarged third edition. Includes the publisher's insert.
