About This Item

UK,slim Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn.FINE/VG++. No owner inscrptn but price-clip to dw/dj.Bright,crisp,clean,glossy,wrap-around white background with multiple assorted b/w and a single sepia pictorial illustrated cartoon(s ) to front panel of dw/dj,with capitalised,red-lettered title and black-lettered author name,spine/backstrip with similarly coloured+lettered author+title as front but title barely discernible as is sunned/faded,but black-lettered author name visible as is publisher's name at foot of same, rear panel with full sepia cartoon: 'THE BRITISH ATLAS,or John Bull supporting the Peace Establisment' by Charles William (1816). Negligible shelf-wear, bumping, creasing to edges and corners - no nicks, tears or splits present other than a tiny peel with reciprocal curl in situ to rear lower corner tip.The majority of edge creasing is to rear panel's lower edge.Top+fore-edges clean without foxing/spotting; contents bright, tight, clean, soild and sound - pristine - no dog-ear reading creases to any pages' corner tips, appears unread, other than my own collation.Publisher's bright,crisp,unblemished,sharp-cornered, original plain red cloth boards with bright, crisp, blocked gilt lettered spine/backstrip,and immaculate b/w cartoon illustrated endpapers - front's a contemporary cartoon of Battle of Trafalgar, rear's b/w 'Punch' cartoon from WW1,by A Wallis Mills respectively. UK,slim Qrto HB+dw/dj,1st edn,7-192pp [paginated] includes 9 chapters and an Epilogue, profuse contemporary facsimile b/w illustration reproductions,b/w cartoons and b/w photographs throughout the text and the book,a Select bibliography, Acknowledgements and an Index; plus [unpaginated] half-title with a b/w 'Punch' cartoon "Right Against Wrong",published just after the outbreak of the Crimean War frontis,to its reverse,a title page,a Contents list/table with contemporary WW2 b/w photograph of a British soldier to its reverse. Visually the exterior appearance is exceptional, and even internally, the book is also in an exceptional condition/state of preservation and presentation for a book of its 40+ years-old age. It [is only the exterior faults described that prevents a slightly higher grading for the dw/dj.Despite them,it really is still an exceptional, exemplary copy for its cleanliness and brightness. The British sense of humour has always been one of the nation's most successful secret weapons in times of war. From the Napoleonic era to modern times, cartoonists have helped people to laugh at their wartime misfortunes both great and small - from the gross incompetence of generals in the Crimean War to the battered shins and bruises of the blackout in WW2. A unique record of the development of the war cartoon from the mordant caricatures in the early pages 'PUNCH', 'JUDY' and 'FUN' in the middle of the 19thC,to the creation of the great cartoon figures of modern times, such as Old Bill of the First World War,and Pilot Officer Prune of the Second.Included are biographies of over twenty of the most brillant cartoonists, from the men who first popularised caretoons - Gillray,Rowlandson, and Cruikshank - through Leech, Doyle, and Tenniel,to the 20thC exponents of the art - Will Dyson, Sir David Low,Sir Osbert Lancaster, and David Langdon. 'Cartoonists at War' not only shows the funny side of war,but also reveals that the cartoon is an accurate historical record, providing a great insight into ordinary people's true feelings and thoughts, their anxieties and hopes,at the time of their greatest trial.Accompanying Frank Huggett's witty and sensitive text - superbly illustrates this look at an often overlooked art form.
