First edition, one of 500 numbered copies produced for the American market, this being #139 and signed by the author beneath the bronze bust portrait frontispiece. 4to. 435pp. Contemporary binding of half red morocco with patterned paper sides, lettered and ruled in gold at the spine (the book was originally issued in wrappers). Top edge gilt, others rough-trimmed. Marbled endpapers. A little fading to the backstrip, the corner tips rubbed, and with a little rubbing and chafing to extremities. Hinges a little tender. A very crisp copy. The author's fictionalized account of his failed marriage, lauded by Sigmund Freud (with whom the author had previously had several sessions) as the greatest psychological novel of the century..
