Pp. xvi+238, coloured frontispiece portrait with tissue guard, 2 black & white plates (battle plans), folding map at end, appendices, index; demy 8vo; brown cloth, lettered in gilt, the upper board a trifle marked and with slight bruise to bottom edge near spine; t.e.g., others uncut; bookplate of David Levine, Sydney, plus bookseller's stamp and earlier owner's name in ink on upper pastedown, a different inked signature (dated 1923) on the upper free endpaper, some foxing throughout, heavy on outer leaves and edges; John Murray, London, 1913. First edition. *Alexander Gordon (1781-1872) was a captain in the 15th Hussars and fought in the Peninsular war, serving under Sir John Moore. In 1847 he was awarded the Peninsular Medal with clasp for Sahagun. The maps are from sketches executed by Captain Gordon.
