About This Item
Boston: Little Brown, 1974. one of the Library of World Biography, J.H. Plumb, General Edition Stated First Edition 8vo size red clothbound hardcover with dust jacket, subject photograph on back of jacket; endpapers are maps; 268 toned pages with some black and white photographs. From jacket: "Rhodesia was his namesake. In effect his private country, it bore his flag and coat of arms, his laws and ordinances. No other financial magnate of the modern world could command his own uniformed army, with which he could make war for the extension of his dominion, as he did. The British government itself could not restrain him. In his short lifetime, Cecil John Rhodes amassed unequaled wealth and power in British South Africa... By rallying the British and Dutch colonists in the area around the issue of race, Rhodes reached the apex of power...he introduced the Glen Grey Act of 1894 which became the blueprint for modern apartheid policies... Despite his undeniable achievements Rhodes was curiously a person of intellectual limitations; he held many eccentric views...he died at age 49, heaped with both encomium and condemnation..." Jacket has edgewear, minor chipping, notably to head and heel of spine and several small tears. There is a tiny spot in the margin of the rear endpage and some light soil or light foxing to top of book. There is a crease to inside back jacket flap. . First. Cloth. Good/Good. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
