About This Item
London: W. & R. Chambers. [1897]. Large printed sheet illustrated with 4 black and white wood engravings depicting polar scenes. Measures 73cm by 59cm. Corners with metal rings enabling it to be displayed on a wall. A very good copy with some age related toning and a little wear along the folds, including a couple of minor tears to the edges and two small holes to the central vertical fold. Overall, the sheet is in an excellent state of preservation, the images clean and bright. Originally sold in sets or individually, these striking illustrative posters were designed for use in schoolrooms at the turn of the twentieth century. The relatively common accompanying handbooks, which contained explanatory text, were published in 1897. The sheets themselves, however, are scarce, with none (either individually or as sets) listed in WorldCat. Depicting a magnificent scene of an 'Eskimo Winter Village', as well as snow crystals, a glacier, and an iceberg, this particular sheet forms a fun, visually pleasing piece of Arctic ephemera. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.
