Adam & Charles Black, 1904. 8vo., original dark blue decorative boards, lettered in gilt, with a gilt top edge; 76 colour-plate illustrations, captioned on the tissue guard, [4] pp adverts at the end of the volume; previous owners inscription on the recto of the ffep, with an early Sotheran stamp on the verso, offsetting to the preliminary blank leaf, edges of boards are a little bumped, the spine is chipped with minute losses to the tail and an 1" repaired split to the head, otherwise a very good, internally fresh, copy. First edition. 3000 copies. ‘A & C Black’s Twenty Shilling series of colour plate books, published from 1901 onwards, brought the world into the home at a time when travel, especially overseas, was much more difficult than it is today. For the first time books containing large numbers of colour plates – up to 100 per volume – were made available to the public at an affordable price.’ (Inman) Inman 13.
