London, Chatto & Windus, 1882. Hard Cover. xvi, 486, 32 pages, facsimile woodcuts throughout; 19.5 cm. "Although these Chap-books are very curious, and on many accounts interesting, no attempt has yet been made to place them before the public in a collected form, accompanied by the characteristic engravings, without which they would lose much of their value. They are the relics of a happily past age" carried in the packs of the pedlars, or Chapmen, to every village, and to every home. ...while they were in their prime, they mark an epoch in the literary history of our nation" and they help us to gauge the intellectual capacity of the lower and lower middle classes of the last century. "As before said, their great variety adapted them for every purchaser, and they may be roughly classed under the following heads:"Religious, Diabolical, Supernatural, Superstitious, Romantic, Humorous, Legendary, Historical, Biographical, and Criminal" I have not included Calendars, and I have purposely avoided Garlands, or Collections of ballads, which equally come under the category of Chap-books" I hope I have succeeded in producing a book at once both amusing and instructive, besides having rescued these almost forgotten booklets from the limbo into which they were fast descending." Good+, brown embossed covers decorated in black & gold; spine edges rubbed, edges & corners worn, ink owner name; withal a very nice copy. Stock#OB301.

Description:
Chicago: The Caxton Club, 1995. gray cloth over boards with white stamping and paper label with slipcase. Caxton Club. 8vo. gray cloth over boards with white stamping and paper label with slipcase. 224 pages. The Caxton Club was founded in Chicago in January 1895 by fifteen bibliophiles. Its objective was the "literary study and promotion of the arts pertaining to the production of books" and "the occasional publishing of books designed to illustrate, promote and encourage these arts." One century later, the Club remains dedicated to this objective. It brings together a community of individuals who share the love of books and provides them a forum to educate one another on their content and design; and about the joys of reading them. In addition, their activities and existence have contributed a significant chapter to the history of book collecting in America with its changing tastes and the evolution of fine printing and fine binding over 100 years in Chicago. Caxton Club historian, Frank J. Piehl,… Read More

Description:
First edition, four volumes, 1909-1920, Washington. Overall very good condition in original bindings. Notable for the complete absence of library or ownership markings. The only marking I can find is an old pencil note on the front blank of volume 3. Includes bound in errata slips and a promotional leaf for the series laid in. The boards have some dings to the corners. Volume 3 has the most condition issues: shows the most outer wear with some stains on the edges and wear on spine and boards (see scans). Bindings are all sound, which I expect can be an issue with this heavy set. A quite decent usable set. Please see scans of the books you will receive.

With an engraved frontispiece and numerous woodcut illustrations throughout. A collection of chap-books printed in the eighteenth century, with facsimiles, notes and a detailed introduction by John Ashton. New Castle, DE: Oak Knoll Press, 2015. paperback. Bookbinding. 6 x 9 inches. paperback. 144 pages. Tricks of the Trade considers what is not taught - but probably should be - about binding and rebinding books. Written for competent binders and knowledgeable collectors, it brings quirky but effective binding techniques out of obscurity and into the professional repertory. Here are tricks binders can use to polish and refine their bindings, as well as suggestions for repairs that may add value to collections. Using photographs of her own bindings as illustrations, Jamie Kamph discusses decorative techniques, sources for design ideas, engineering concerns, and ways to both correct and avoid common mistakes. In addition to providing practical solutions, Kamph's advice delves into the grey area between technical discipline and artistic invention. Detailed instructions and drawings describe binding practices such as corner shaping, headbanding, rebacking, and recasing books. An extensive discussion… Read More

Following Marshall McLuhan's famous quote the medium is the message this article presents the Klingspor Museum in Offenbach/Main as a unique institution representing the genre of the artists book. The Klingspor Museum is more than simply a collection of book related arts because of its foundational idea of type- and bookmaking that put tremendous emphasis on merging these two domains. The leading personality of that history is Karl Klingspor. The practice of his type foundry revolutionised the ways that trade markets, literature, and culture in general traditionally separated until then came together in the foundry. From this beginning in the foundry, Klingspor developed a collecting ethos that brought together the arts of type, writing and the book, thereby promoting the process of creation itself. New York: The Bibliographical Society of America, 1990. cloth. 8vo. cloth. 254 pages. The history of the book trade in Medieval London before the age of print has long remained a matter of speculation. Few records survive that name the book artisans and entrepreneurs involved with this early trade venture or that document directly their methods of producing books and creating markets for them. In this directory, C. Paul Christianson assembles an extensive body of alternative data drawn from archival documents that identifies 262 participants in the London trade during a period of 200 years. This group includes stationers, manuscript artisans (called limners), textwriters, bookbinders, parchment sellers, and other London citizens active in book production and sale. This book provides a summary of information about the independent book craftsman working in London during this period. Four appendices contain indexes, and two maps, one modern and one from the sixteenth century, illustrate the historical… Read More
