Published by Alfred A. Knopf, New York; 1964. This is a Near Fine copy of the First American edition of this modern chidren's classic, which preceded the UK First edition by 3 years. This is the true first printing of this book, with 6 lines of colophon, or printing information on the last page, later printings had 4 or 5, mustard endpapers and the original price of $3.95 to the dustjacket. The book is tightly bound in it's original burgundy cloth boards, blind-stamped with a title medallion on the front panel and gilt to the spine. There is just the slightest hint of rubbing to the board edges and bumping to the corners and spine ends, and a very faint mark to the front panel below the stamp. Apart from these though, the book is very tightly bound and in clean, smart condition. Inside, there is an ownership label affixed to the mustard front free endpaper. The pages are clean and bright with no blemishes to speak of and appearing barely read and in excellent condition. The dust jacket is also in Near Fine condition, with some general minor rubbing and a very small mark to the left edge of the rear panel. There is a Doubleday sticker affixed to the top right corner of the rear panel of the jacket. It is unclipped, with the original price on the front flap. There is some slight bumping to the edges and a small tear to the bottom edge of thefront panel. However, it is in smart, bright condition and these are just very minor issues. In all, this is a highly collectible example of this modern classic children's first edition.

No dust wrapper. The first and only full-length novel featuring Hammett's celebrated gumshoe Sam Spade. The print runs of the first US and first UK editions are unknown, but considering the relative…
