Description

New York: Alfred A Knopf, 1972. First edition (stated). Very good plus in near fine jacket.. First printing of the gruesome sequel to the unsettling original. In which Charlie Bucket, having won himself a Chocolate Factory in the preceding book, must leave it behind to do elevator-based space-battle with frankly horrifying creatures. Dahl, criticized by a number of earnest critics with sober concerns over his child-pleasing literary amorality in CHARLIE AND THE CHOCOLATE FACTORY, went still further into nightmare realms in this later sequel. Though Dahl takes some time to launch a satirical side-attack on "Space Hotel USA," "manned by the three famous astronauts, Shuckworth, Shanks and Showler, all of them handsome, clever and brave," the book lives and dies by its Vermicious Knids, creations dredged up from the depths of the human subconscious and magnificently deployed to haunt an imaginative young reader for life. 9'' x 6''. Original quarter blue cloth with pictorial blue and beige boards. In original unclipped ($3.95) dust jacket. Grey endpapers. Black and white illustrations by Shindelman throughout. [12], 164 pages. Some mild sunniong to beards and jacket extremities. Else clean and sound.
