The first edition of this work, one of the 'English Men of Letters' series that was popular in the latter half of the nineteenth century.The work of English historian Sir Adolphus William Ward.Illustrated with a hand coloured engraved portrait frontispiece, retaining the original tissue guard.A biography and critical analysis of the poet responsible for 'The Canterbury Tales'.With the morocco bookplate of W.A. Foyle of Beeleigh Abbey to the front pastedown. William Foyle founded Foyles bookshop in 1903 alongside his brother. He purchased Beeleigh Abbey during the Second World War, an impressive twelfth century monastery in Essex. Beeleigh housed his library, one of the largest private libraries in England. Rebound in half calf, with marbled paper covered boards. Endpapers renewed. Fading to back strip, with boards bright. Bookplate to front pastedown. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright.
