Stamp from the chambers of Judge Wright to top of text block. Ownership signature of Wright though not in his hand to front free endpaper. Octavo. 401 pages. Decorative dust jacket. Beige boards stamped in blue. Volume one in Coles' five volume social study of children, this volume focusing on Ruby, an African-American child entering a recently desegregated school at the age of six. Judge Wright was a pioneer of desegregation in New Orleans, earning him national recognition and animosity from the local community. Volumes two and three of Coles' series would go on to win the Pulitzer Prize, sharing the honor in with Fire in the Lake in 1973. Unclipped dust jacket is lightly worn along edges with some toning. A touch of smudging to edges of boards. Binding gives a little but is sound. Pages clean and unmarked.
