Child's History of England by Dickens, Charles - 1852

LONDON: Tho Roycroft for Richard Blome, 1673 A fair copy of the 1st edition sadly lacking all but 2 of the maps. This work is rare. Richard Blome was heavily criticised at the time for producing the work - being accused of plagiarising Camden and Speed. He funded the work through subscribers but clearly sold few copies and ownership of it passed to John Wright in 1677. His work is now being reassessed and he is recognised for being the first to properly plan an illustrated description of London. This copy is in contemporary full leather binding which has been rebacked reasonably recently to provide a new spine with raised bands and gilt outlined title label. The boards have wear as you would expect - particularly to the corners - but are sound. London: F. And C. Rivington. Good+ with no dust jacket. 1803. Early Edition. Later Printing. Hard Cover. Complete in 16 Volumes. Publisher's half dark green leather with marbled boards, endpapers and edges, 5 gilt decorated raised bands on spine, gilt lettering in two of the compartments on the spine, gilt decoration in the remaining four. The first eight volumes are dated 1803, with the remaining eight volumes dating from1812 to 1827. . Leather spines are brittle and chipped with some loss at the heads of the spine on about five of the volumes, rubbing but no loss at the bottom of the spines and the tips, hinges are rubbed, but holding, former owner's name in elegant cursive at top of title page, else unmarked, square and clean. GOOD+. . 8vo 8" - 9" tall .

LONDON: J Wilcox , 1732 First edition of Coker's Survey of Dorsetshire - with the original county map and 6 copper plates of Arms as called for. Stated to have been written originally by Thomas Gerrard in the 1620's and then first published by Coker in 1732. In contemporary full leather binding with newer spine with gilt titles. With title page; dedication 1p; folding map of Dorsetshire; text with decorative head and tailpieces and initial capitals 128pp; Names of Persons/plate listing 4pp; 6 plates of Arms; Index 16pp; blank. The original leather boards have wear to corners and the newer spine (which is of poorer quality leather) has fraying at the top and bottom and some wear along the spine joints - particularly the front joint. The contents are very clean and in good order with just the occasional mark. The map has a crease from poor folding but is complete and clean. The endpapers have some marking and the front endpaper has not been repaired along the joint when the new spine was added.

First edition, octavo; xvi,232pp, with full complement of 34 engravings, 33 of which are folding. In contemporary unlettered full calf (a little worn with minor loss to board corners, sometime skilfully rebacked in matching leather), five raised spine bands, internally clean with only the lightest of occasional dust staining. Muller was deputy head of the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, where he was instrumental to its transformation into a disciplined cadet academy. An attractive first edition example of his first work. Laurence Sterne possessed the text in second edition, with possible influence on Uncle Toby and Corporal Trim's obsessions with fortification in The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy. This genuine rarity is the first and only Canadian issue of My African Journey, among the scarcest English language first editions of Churchill's book-length works. We have seen only a precious few on the market over many years. My African Journey is Churchill's travelogue on Britain's possessions in East Africa, written while he was serving as Undersecretary of State for the Colonies. This book is notable, among other things, for being the only one of his many books to contain photographs apparently taken by the author. In the summer of 1907 Churchill left England for five months, making his way after working stops in southern Europe to Africa for "a tour of the east African domains."
