Trace of foxing to endsheets, else near fine in torn glassine and paper flap dust jacket. First edition, published as #11 of the Furnival Books. Foreword by Geoffrey West. With the usual tipped-in sheet recording the assumption of the series by Joiner & Steele. Copy #5 of 550 numbered copies (500 for sale), printed at the Chiswick Press and signed by the author. In addition to being signed on the limitation page, this copy is inscribed by Benson to the publisher "For Mr. A.W. Steele." It is also signed by West at the end of his Foreword, and by Leighton in the margin of the frontis. Those copies offered for general sale were signed only by Benson.

Santa Fe: The Rydal Press, [ 1939].. Gray cloth, stamped in black and green. Illustrated with reproductions of lithographs by Peter Hurd. Short surface crack in upper joint near crown, some tanning and slight rippling of the pastedowns, else a near fine copy, in very good, slightly tanned dust jacket. First edition. The dedication copy, inscribed by the author on the dedication page (and incorporating the printed dedication): "In friendship To Vernon Knapp from Paul Horgan, the first copy of the edition which is all his, in the name of a long and good time. Roswell 1939." The recipient joined the faculty of the New Mexico Military Institute in Roswell in 1928 as a member of the English faculty, and in time excelled as well in geology, serving as department head. He retired as a LTC and was inducted into the Institute's Hall of Fame in 1958. Horgan, himself a graduate of the Institute, was later on staff there, and the Institute's Library was named for him.

One of an unknown number of unnumbered copies bound thus, in addition to 26 lettered copies, and 100 numbered, and some unnumbered copies, in wrappers, all signed by the author and the artist. This was the poet's own copy, inscribed to him by the artist ("Thanks De") on the colophon, with an original pencil drawing (with colored highlights) of two figures, seemingly the poet and the artist, on the colophon. Snodgrass's library blindstamp appears in the upper forecorner of the free endsheet.

Printed in London by Charles Whittingham and Griggs at the Chiswick Press. Stella Benson (1892-1933) was an English feminist, novelist, poet, and travel writer. She died the year after Christmas Formula was published, of pneumonia while in Tonkin, the northern Vietnamese region of French Indochina.

Contemporary calf spine with six spine compartments between double gilt rules; red morocco label in second compartment with gilt-tooled title: Mansie Wauch. Marbled paper over boards. All page edges speckled. Remains of old paper label at head of spine and call number in white at tail. In ink on the title page in an old hand, following the title "By Mr Moir." At head of title page in another hand: "To the UPS from Hiester H. Muhlenberg of Reading Pa." Hiester H. Muhlenberg (1812-1886) graduated from Dickinson College in 1829 and practiced medicine in Reading; later he became a banker. A bookplate and inscriptions on the front fixed endpaper indicate that Muhlenberg gave the book to the Union Philosophical Society of Dickinson College in 1837.
