Illustrated dust jacket over publisher's green cloth with gilt titles to spine and front board, with portrait illustration. Light shelfwear to boards and rubbing to head and tail of spine and corners. A few wrinkles to cloth. Rear panel of jacket detached from spine but present. Most of top 1.75" and bottom 4" of spine perished with a few additional chips to edges of jacket (chip to rear panel affecting a few words). Rear panel advertisement "Anne of Green Gables, Anne of Avonlea, the Story Girl, Kilmeny of the Orchard". Textblock edges slightly foxed, fore-edge uncut. Previous owner's signature dated in the year of publication on ffep. Endpapers and first few pages light foxed with a few additional bits of foxing internally, else a clean copy. very good An exceptional L.M. Montgomery rarity in the dust jacket. Until this copy, and a better example,in this catalogue, the jacket of the true first edition of Chronicles of Avonlea had not been seen by us. Unrecorded in Editions and Impressions. Although the jacket spine is missing portions, the remainder of the jacket is virtually complete and the front panel illustration remains bright and unfaded. Synopsis
Chronicles of Avonlea is a collection of short stories by L. M. Montgomery, related to the Anne of Green Gables series. It features a number of stories relating to the fictional Canadian village of Avonlea, and was first published in 1912. The book is dedicated: "To the memory of MRS WILLIAM A. HOUSTON, a dear friend who has gone beyond."
