The approximately eighty letters collected here are largely to Alfred Stieglitz, but include as well texts contributed to exhibition catalogues, and letters to Paul Strand, Egemont Arens and Lee Simonson. This limited issue is uncommon.

Bound in screenprinted paper, shades of brown with chestnut leaves, over boards. Laid in matching clamshell box. Author and title printed in black on spine and box. Signed and numbered by printer and artist. Of the edition numbers 1 - 10 include an additional mezzotint and are in a clamshell box; 1 -4 also include one of the original copper plates. Copies 11-50 presented in slipcases. Neruda's text is accompanied with three mezzotints by Judith Rothchild. While the text presentation is sparse and clean the images are velvety and dense. They capture the essence of Neruda's words - "from bristly foliage" to "only a seed".

White moire endpapers. Lacking original slipcase. This is no. 47 of a limited edition of 100 copies, each numbered and signed by the artist, Alice Stewart. There are two or more binding variants. The illustrations vary in each of the 100 copies of this beautiful book. In Very Good Condition: edges are rubbed; binding lightly soiled; front free endpaper detached but present, lacking lower gutter corner; first blank leaf following front endpapers also detached but present; a few small spots of light discoloration (as is typical of this book); otherwise, clean and bright.

Rough-woven burlap covered boards with facsimile of Cummings' signature stamped in silver to the front panel. A very good copy, the burlap covering the boards cracked and loose along the outer hinges (seemingly a common occurrence with this title), with a little rubbing and loss to the outer corners and spine tips. The binding itself remains, firm and square. The lightly toned contents are clean throughout. Loosely laid is the printed card of the Gotham Book Mart Gallery, New York, with the title and date of the book typed centrally. Signed by the author in green watercolour across the title page (Firmage's bibliography notes variants signed in red and blue).
