Each key city is discussedat the height of its greatness by a different expert including Sir Maurice Bowra, Harold Acton, Steven Runciman, Allan Nevins, and many others. Edited by noted historian Arnold Toynbee, the book contains 20 essays on important cities and time periods, such as Alexandria under the Ptolemies, eighteenth-century St. Petersburg, Victorian and Edwardian London, and mid-twentieth-century New York. There are 542 illustrations, including 157 in color, and 385 black and white photographs, drawings, maps, plans, and diagrams.
