Light pencil price on flyleaf. Dust jacket smudged; spine a bit darkened; tail shows light chipping and a light dampstain; a couple short closed tears to bottom edge of front panel; not price clipped ($2.50). DJ in clear archival sleeve. 273, plus [4] pp. ads. 7.75 x 5.5 inches. After an introduction on Culture and Barbarism, Lewisohn discusses men under the headings of Englishmen, Americans, Germans, Frenchmen, Jews, analyzing and appraising such literary figures as Hazlett, George Saintsbury, Santayana, William Ellery Leonard, Thomas Mann, Rilke, Flaubert, Baudelaire, Heine, George Brandes, and Martin Buber. He then provides commentary on a few cities, including Vienna, Berlin, and Venice. Ludwig Lewisohn (1882-1955) was a German-Jewish author and literary critic and editor for The Nation. He immigrated to the United States with his parents in 1890 and was one of the founding faculty members at Brandeis University when it was established in 1948.
