A fascinating work of historical fiction set in the 15th century, by the English novelist and dramatist Charles Reade Copiously illustrated with sixteen plates and vignettes throughout. Charles Reade was an English author renowned for his passionate concern with social issues, as demonstrated within his novels, that frequently attacked the social injustices of his times. He is also remembered for this text, 'The Cloister and the Hearth', his historical novel which relates the travels of a young scribe and illuminator, Gerard Eliassoen, through several European countries, exploring his struggle between man's obligations to family and to Church as he wavers between religious celibacy and human love. The text gained great critical success, and was named by the notable English author Arthur Conan Doyle as his favourite novel. In a cloth binding. Externally, sound. Joints slightly tender.
