He had Strawberry Hill House built in Twickenham, south-west London, reviving the Gothic style some decades before his Victorian successors. His literary reputation rests on the first Gothic novel, The Castle of Otranto (1764), and his Letters, which are of significant social and political interest. Questionable, a first tourist guide - In the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries it was fashionable to take a boat tour down the Wye Valley, to view its romantic sites and picturesque landscape. 'Tourists' dined at specific locations, took walks to particular viewpoints and visited specific romantic ruins, making the 'Wye Tour' one of the first package holidays. In 1768 Gilpin published a popular Essay on Prints, where he defined the picturesque as "that kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture" and began to expound his "principles of picturesque beauty", based largely on his knowledge of landscape painting. During the late 1760s and 1770s, Gilpin travelled extensively in the summer holidays and applied his principles to the landscapes he saw, committing his thoughts and spontaneous sketches to notebooks. Under "Trade Notes," a paragraph for "Books, Binding &c." states, "The Booksellers of Richmond are all gentlemen of superior intelligence, and of long experience, possessing a critical knowledge of books, and a thorough familiarity with the needs of the scholar, professional man, and the general public."

Small quarto (11 x 8 1/4 inches) Published in the Interest of the Firemen's Relief Fund, December 1900. 116 pages of half tone black and white photos of early Los Angeles, portraits, and advertisements for Los Angeles businesses of the period.

Descriptive text includes a short history of the Los Angeles Fire Department: "In May, 1875, Engine Company No. 2 was organized."

Good condition: original red cloth binding, showing mild age toning, title on front cover, floral patterned end papers.

Many photos of early Los Angeles fire stations, with horse drawn equipment.

Portraits include: the mayor, the Fire Commissioners back to 1871, Chiefs, Captains, Lieutenants, Engine Drivers, Engineers, Hosemen, and Ladder men.

Advertisements include breweries, hardware supplies, saloons, blacksmiths, and stables among many others.

You get one antique A Handful of Autumn Leaves by Alice Carry Verner 1911 hardcover book published by Hermann Lechner in New York. It does not come with a dust jacket. This item is in English and is in good condition with some wear to its covers and edges. The binding is tight and the book is complete with no loose pages. The pages have tanned over time and someone wrote (in pencil) the number 10 on the front end-page. This item is 8.5 inches tall by 5.75 inches wide. Booker T. Washington was a famous 19th-century American civil rights activist known for his anti-slavery platform during the height of Negro lynchings in the American South. Born as a slave child during the American Civil War, Washington describes his difficulties and obstacles in his autobiography 'Up From Slavery'. This work follows more than forty years of his life, the state of race relations, and the rise and fall of the Negro social ladder.

While many authors and political leaders, such as WEB du Bois, were highly critical of Washington's work, he still emphasized the importance of education among the black population, especially in the South, which was a realistic tactic to easing racial tensions. This book was also gives the first mention of extremist groups such as the Ku Klux Klan.
