About This Item
London: Constable, 1951. First edition. Cloth. Fine/Near Fine. 9" by 6". Not Stated. A smart limited edition, first edition copy of this collection of poems by the Irish poet Oliver St. John Gogarty. The first edition of this work, and one of five hundred limited edition copies, in the publisher's original quarter cloth binding with marbled boards and the original unclipped dust wrapper. Oliver St. John Gogarty (1878-1957) was an Irish poet, author, politician, and well-known conversationalist, who associated with other Dublin literati such as W. B. Yeats and Lord Dunsany. James Joyce based the character Buck Mulligan, in his novel Ulysses, on Gogarty. This anthology contains a selection of his poems, with three prefaces: one written by W. B. Yeats, another by 'A. E.' (George William Russell), and the last by Horace Reynolds. The poems in this work are a mixture of odes, elegies, satires and addresses. In the publisher's original quarter cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth and boards are very bright and smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright and clean, except for light offsetting to the end papers. Dust wrapper is smart, though a little sunned to the spine, with minor shelf wear to the head of the spine. Fine
