1967. Unbound. Near Fine. A collection of 21 original pieces of Signed art from Arthur Hawkins, Jr. (1903-1985), celebrated book jacket illustrator and designer, which includes original dustwrapper paintings, original dry point illustrations, pencil and pen drawings, scratchboard illustrations, an airbrushed image, and a binder of 55 partial dustwrappers of his work, including one unused jacket proof. Hawkins is a true legend of jacket design who created some of the most stunning covers of the '30s, '40s and '50s, including James Cain's *The Postman Always Rings Twice*, John O'Hara's *Butterfield 8* and William Faulkner's *Light in August*. Highlights of this collection include original jacket art for Royce Brier's *Last Boat from Beyrouth*, an unidentified jacket featuring a shadowy figure creeping around a darkened town; eight original dry point caricatures of Edith Wharton, Sherwood Anderson, Carl Van Doren, and other American literati; an unused proof for Josiah Thompson's *Six Seconds in Dallas*, along with 55 other jackets including Arthur C. Clarke's *A Fall of Moondust*, Philip K. Dick's *Time Out of Joint*, Ross Macdonald's *The Far Side of the Dollar*, John Steinbeck's *Bombs Away*, and Donald E. Westlake's *Killy*, along with an original airbrushed art for a beer-related advertisement. Further details available upon request.

Description:
Undated. 16" x 13". Oil on wood. Framed. A portrait of Cummings' wife, Marion Morehouse, reclining on a bed in a position reminiscent, presumably deliberately, of Goya's "The Naked Maja." Goya's painting was considered scandalous in its day, in a way that some of Cummings' artwork -- especially his erotic paintings of strippers, lovers, and sensuous nudes -- were in his own time, or at least he seems to have intended them to be. A stylized image, foreshortening perspective and thus alluding to Cummings' origins as an abstract, rather than realist, painter. Fine. Letter of provenance provided. No Binding. Fine.

1969. FINE. Original oil on board, 11 1/2 x 8 in. framed with linen mat. SIGNED and dated CAA lower right, framed dimensions 17 1/2 x 14 label on back "General Store Gallery / Austin, Texas" and sealed. Photos on request. James Boren was one of the deans of modern western painters in Texas. Born in Waxahachie, Boren was inducted into the Cowboy Artists of America and became one of its most celebrated and honored members. His preferred media was watercolor. Few oils have come to market. In the late 1960s he and fellow CAA member Melvin Warren, both established homes and studios in the small central Texas town of Clifton and helped turn that city into something of a western artist's colony. This small gem in oil is rare to see and not offered for sale previously, having been purchased by me from the original owner in San Antonio in the early 1980's. Only a few oils have turned up on the auction sights, most recent items are $3,000 - 8,000.00.

New York:: Alfred A. Knopf,, [1932].. First edition.. publisher's blue lettered cloth in dust jacket by Arthur Hawkins, Jr.. This book was probably a drug store lending copy, and the ownership stamp of the store has been neatly removed in five or six places. There is some light insect damage to the blue cloth and to about 1-1/2" of the rear joint. The cloth has a few stray spots. The dust jacket has some closed tears, some moderate chipping, and the orange area of the backstrip is somewhat faded. This is an extremely scarce book, particularly in dust jacket. It was made into a movie in 1932 with Ginger Rogers in a minor part and is a classic of the genre. We have never had nor seen another copy in jacket. . 8vo,.
