JAY PARINI is Axinn Professor of English at Middlebury College. A former Guggenheim Fellow and Visiting Fellow at Christ Church College, Oxford, Parini has written three volumes of poetry, four novels, a critical evaluation of Theodore Roethke's work, and a biography of John Steinbeck. He has written for The Columbia Literary History of the United States, and edited Gore Vidal: A Retrospective and The Columbia History of American Poetry, all published by Columbia University Pres
