Summary
This astonishing true story is the tale of a young American man who was sent to the Soviet Union with his parents by the Ford Motor Company to set up an auto plant. Victor was an avid boxer and became a pilot and a world record sky diver. In 1938 he was thrown into Soviet political prisons - the Gulag - and could not return to America until 45 years later. Victor met and fell in love with a beautiful Russian gymnast. When Victor was again spirited away in the night Galina walked day and night through the frozen wastes of Siberia with the desperate hope of finding her love. She did. She lived with him and their child in a cave chopped out of the ice. Victor had not known there was a World War raging. All he could see was that his guards were eating American tinned food. He knew he had to survive and tell the world what had happened to the thousands that were, like him, thrown into political prisons for being American and living in the USSR. Victor did not have hate as a motive. He went beyond and felt a need to help the innocents. In the end he was coaching a KGB boxing team.
