Description

UK: David & Charles. Very Good/Very Good. 1980. Second Impression. Hard Cover. Lge 8vo 0715376667 Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Original cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks. 340 pages clean and tight. This book lists every bird species - surviving and extinct- since the end of the Pleistocene or Ice Age. Some of these birds are known only by bones and have never been seen alive by man. Fossil species (ie, birds which became extinct before the end of the Ice Age) are not included. Where species are known only as a result of travellers' accounts and from hearsay evidence, the doubtful status of these birds is clearly indicated. Data on world distribution, habitat, food, nesting, clutch size, incubation and fledgling periods are given and for each family of birds a brief summary of the general characteristics of the family is included. Authorities are by no means agreed on the status of certain forms, and where serious disagreement exists as to whether a particular bird should be considered a species or merely a race of another species, a note or comment is inserted. .
