Sydney: Odana, 1998. 1st ed. Hardcover. Fine. Lindsay, Norman. 1st ptg., large 4to, full blue-green cloth, fine in fine, unclipped dj, no previous owner's marks.

Catalogue raisonné of his 175 unpublished and 200 published etchings trace his development from the first tentative beginning in 1897 to the maturity of his etched line in the 1920s and 1930s.

160 illustrations, complemented with insighdts into Lindsay's technique, the books he illustrated with original etchings and the etched bookplates. Among the highlights of the volume are chapters on the published and unpublished etchings. These chapters contribute to a deeper understanding of Lindsay's philosophy and outline the source of inspiration for many of the etchings.

More than simply another art reference book, this documents vividly the intricate artistic, financial and business practices that shaped the complex working relationship between the artist and his printmaker partner Rose, and their galleries, dealers and publishers. It traces the history of the galleries from 1918 to the present, quoting comprehensively from contemporary reviews. Sales and marketing are discussed, together with a table of comparative prices. A chapter on the facsimile etchings is also included.

Winner of the Australian Sixteenth National Print Gold Award.

A brief guide to letter writing etiquette and "the correct usage of fine stationary", advertising products sold by the Whiting Paper Company. It wastes no time establishing tone, and instruct the reader right away that "Papers of brilliant colors are not in good form. Bright reds, blues, yellows, etc., serve a purpose as window decorations but are not desirable for personal use" (p. [3]). It goes on to describe which colors, paper sizes, and qualities are preferable for different uses, in great detail; conventions for everything from visiting cards to monograms, regrets, and mourning cards. Of particular interest is a section instructing the reader how to address the President, the Governor, a Generals, or a Bishop (pp. 14-16), each with its own requirements and conventions. Suncook, Pembroke, N.H., 1878. 12mo, original russet cloth, gilt title and decorative black stamping on front cover, lower cover with blind-stamped title and ornament. Frontis. portrait engraving, 63 pp., illus. On the morning of October 4, 1875, the beautiful 17-year-old Josie Langmaid did not show up for school. When Pembroke Academy staff notified her family, a search party was assembled. That night the party found her decapitated and violated body in the woods near the school and discovered her head the next morning. Following the initial arrest of innocent parties, the actual murderer was identified as French-Canadian woodcutter Joseph Lapage. Tried and found guilty, he admitted to his crime (as well as a similar murder in Vermont) on March 15th, 1878 and was hung the following day. The town of Pembroke placed a monument to the victim near the murder site, with directions to the sites where her body and head were discovered. Keeler's forty-page poetic eulogy is preceded by a brief account of… Read More
