Description

London: John Morphew, 1712. Pp. 96 [plus later binder's blanks]; small cr. 8vo; later grey papered boards, edges a trifle rubbed, the joints cracking, small piece chipped from head of spine, the gilt lettered and ruled red leather title label quite rubbed; with some early inked markings (see footnote) and occasional slight soiling; printed for John Morphew, London, 1712[1711]. First edition. Teerink 539; ESTC T1146; Rothschild 2025. *The imprint is 1712, but the date of publication was actually November 27, 1711, in an edition of 1,000 copies. The date was corrected in the second edition, which quickly followed. In this copy, an early reader, has made some marginal markings and underlined some of the text in ink, annotating the title page: 'By Dr. Davenant, and Dr. Swift'. Charles Davenant (1656-1714) was a Tory MP and one of the leading economic and political pamphleteers of the time, but the suggestion of his authorship of this pamphlet has not been substantiated.
