Description

New York: Covici Friede, 1932. First edition. First edition, first printing. [iv], 316pp. Bound in publisher's tan cloth with black lettering, red topstain. Very Good with toning and a little staining to cloth,a little fraying to cloth along edges, foxing to top edge, offsetting to endpapers. Lacking jacket. The scarce first edition of a literary landmark, the first novel to feature a black detective. Harlem Renaissance literary pioneer Rudolph Fisher's NYPD detective Perry Dart would pave the way for later literary icons such as Chester Himes's tandem Grave Digger Jones and Coffin Ed Johnson or Walter Mosley's Easy Rawlins. A doctor and X-ray specialist by trade, Fisher would pass away two years after publication age 37.
