Description:
Paris: Galerie Beaux-Arts, 1938.. Large octavo. Pictorial stiff wrappers (after a design by Tanguy). Very heavily illustrated with drawings, photographs, facsimiles, etc. Pale green wrappers somewhat tanned at edges, neatly recased, with shallow loss at crown and toe of spine, usual light foxing, otherwise a very good copy in lightly chipped and tanned glassine wrapper. This copy is significantly better than the norm for this book. First edition. A multi-disciplinary exercise in self-explanation, drawing on primary texts for the definition of terms and tendencies, and reproductions of artworks by those who at various times found or placed themselves under the umbrella of Surréalisme. The work was compiled to accompany the Exposition International du Surréalisme, organized by Breton and Eluard, with the assistance of Duchamp, Ernst, Dali and others, and the uncommon [8]pp. catalogue of the exhibition (inevitably a bit tanned) is laid in.

Yale University Press, 2014. First Edition. Hardcover. NEW in publisher's shrink-wrap. hardcover, Yale University Press, 2014, 272 pages. Ships from Hawaii. This compelling examination of the work and lives of Expressionist artists Wassily Kandinsky and Gabriele Münter and Dadaists Hans Arp and Sophie Taeuber illuminates the roles of gender and the applied arts in abstraction's early days. Both pairs were feminist―the women ambitious and the men supportive of their work―but theirs was a feminism that embraced differences between the sexes. This innovative look at the personal relationships of two influential artist couples shows how everyday life―mundane concerns along with…
