A plate from John Gabriel Stedman's "Narrative of a Five Years' Expedition against the Revolted Slaves of Surinam" (London: Joseph Johnson, 1796). This book, with its graphic depiction of slavery and colonization in the New World, became an important reference for early abolitionists.<br/><br/> Image shows the tattooed Ranger with pipe and rifle. Two men of a similar station can be seen in the background. <br><br> William Blake (1757-1827) was a British poet, painter, and printmaker.<br/><br/>
