1553 Peter Apianus Cosmographia Astronomy Navigation Map Mathematics AMERICA

Peter Apian was a 16th-century humanist who is remembered for his studies in astronomy and mathematics. His best and most-known work was his book on cosmography which was extremely influential into the 17th-century. In this work, Apian discusses navigation by use of astronomy and was filled with woodcut illustrations depicting aspects of astronomy and navigation. Other illustrations include zodiac characters, planets, maps, and navigational instruments.

But perhaps the most important aspect of this book is that it is one of the earliest works relating to America. In 1507, Martin Waldseemuler printed a map which included the word 'America' for the first time. 'Cosmographiae Introductio' was published as an accompaniment to that map.

This 1553 edition was annotated by Gemma Frisius, a famed Dutch cartographer

1545 Saint Venerable BEDE Bible & Commentary English Monk Church Cosmology

Saint Venerable Bede was an English monk during the 7th- and 8th-centuries. He is most remembered for his ecclesiastical work on the history of English people, in which he discusses the establishment and growth of the church throughout the known world. He also wrote important commentaries on the books of the Bible. This work explains relevant Biblical passages, as well as describes the allegorical notes of Church Fathers. However, he did not write exclusively of church theology. He also wrote on the development of time and ideas of cosmology.
This 16th-century Latin edition was published in Paris by Roigny. An impressive, three-volume folio set!

1856 1ed Narrative of Expedition American Squadron Perry Hawkes JAPAN China MAPS

First and only complete edition of Commodore Perry's Japan Expedition!

Matthew Perry was one of the most important American Naval officers during the 19th-century. While he was notable for his involvement in the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War, his most famous accomplishment came as the leader of a voyage to Japan beginning in 1852 aboard the East India Squadron. This series of short visits sought to pursue Japanese trade treaties, but Perry and his crew discovered much more – Japanese and Chinese cultures, politics, coal mining and agriculture, as well as attempts at occupation of Formosa. While many events came from this expedition, according to Hill,
"the most important result was that the visit contributed to the collapse of the feudal regime and to the modernization of Japan"

The events of this expedition were recorded by Perry and Francis Hawks in the 1856 account "Narrative of the Expedition of an… Read More

Roger Long was an 18th-century English astronomer from Cambridge. While little is known of his life, he is certainly best-known for his book 'Astronomy' – a thorough treatise studying all aspects of astronomy. In this treatise, Long covers the surface and phases of the moon, planetary orbits, the rings of Saturn, comets and meteors, behavior of sunlight, the zodiac and astrological signs, as well as the importance of astronomy on navigation.
While the contents of this book are extensive, the full-page and folding engravings set this work apart from other astronomy texts of this era.

The Texas Expedition of Sla Salle began in 1684 when he and crew left France to establish a colony on the Gulf of Mexico. The voyage is one of the most important European voyages in search of the Mississippi River – a voyage the ended in mutiny and the death of La Salle. "There are some so restless that when they are free from labour they labour all the more, because the leisure they have for thought, the worse interior turmoil they have to bear."
― Gregory the Great

Pope Gregory I was one of the most important figures of the establishment and growth of the Catholic Church. He wrote several important works on his views of the church, sacraments, purgatory and heaven, antichrist, miracles, heresies, and much more. His book 'Regula Pastoralis' or 'Pastoral Care', is a work clearly explaining and describing the responsibilities of the clergy. It is often considered the most influential and important work written on the topic of the role of preachers and ecclesiastical fathers.

This impressive 16th-century edition of the works of Pope Gregory was published at the Vatican in 1588 during the papacy of Sixtus V.

1723 Scheuchzer SWISS ALPS Voyages Illustrated Switzerland Zurich Bern Travel

Johann Jakob Scheuchzer was an early 18th-century Swiss scholar who is best remembered for his incredible travelogues. Beginning in 1702, Scheuchzer traveled to nearly every corner of Switzerland focusing his excursions on natural studies, mountains, and glaciers. And while most of the work was scientifically accurate, he does include anecdotal evidence of dragons! According to Fischer, Scheuchzer was the first to make the nature of Switzerland be the focus of any comprehensive research.

This report was published under the title 'Itinera Alpina' – an itinerary of his adventures in the Swiss Alps. This 1723 Leiden edition was published by Vander Aa, and is notable for its exquisite full-page illustrations of cities views, natural bridges and waterfalls, and Swiss relics. This example is the first two volumes of Scheuchzer's famous travel work.

Peter Apian was a 16th-century humanist who is remembered for his studies in astronomy and mathematics. One of his best known works was his 1534 mathematics treatise 'Instrumentum Primi Mobilis'. This book was Apian's studies in trigonometry, and, according to Tomash & Williams,
"Apian published a table of sines that, for the first time, was based on a circle with a radius of a power of ten, in this case one hundred thousand. The values of the functions were thus decimal and were easily adapted to any situation in which the defining circle was a decimal power."
This 1534 first edition is exceedingly rare and valuable. It contains the expected sine charts as well as numerous woodcut illustrations depicting protractor and arc readings. Note that this incredible work includes the original title page, which features a woodcut after Albrecht Durer.
