In 1884 the yacht Mignonette set sail from England bound for Sydney. Halfway through the 12000 mile journey they were his by a huge storm off the coast of West Africa and the yacht was sunk by a 40 foot wave. Captain and crew were cast adrift a thousand miles from land in a leaky 13 foot boat. After 19 days they were all near death and they resorted to the 'custom of the sea' - cannibalism. .
