About This Item

Uppsala, 2013. In English. Hard cover, 29 cm, 100 pp., ill. ISBN: 978-91-7081-254-5.

Full description of the architecture and finds and detailed analysis of the local and imported pottery, lamps, gold and silver jewellery and bronze and iron objects recovered from a Cypro-Archaic tomb at Xylotymbou in eastern Cyprus and three Cypro-Classical tombs at Phlasou in the rich Karkotis Valley in the northwest of the island. The tombs were excavated by Georgiou in 2000/2001 and 2011. The Xylotymbou material richly demonstrates the liveliness, international contacts and wealth of Cyprus in the Archaic period, when the kingdoms of the island enjoyed relative peace and political independence. The tombs of Phlasou, in contrast, reflect a period of political instability as the kingdoms of Cyprus, now under Persian rule, fought either for independence from the Persians or against each other to win the favour of the Persians. The concluding chapter discusses the sites in their regional context and the historical implications of the tombs and their contents. An Appendix by Charalambous, Dikomitou-Eliadou and Kassianidou on the chemical composition of pottery from Xylotymbou Tomb 153 addresses the question of the origin (local or imported Phoenician) of Grey and Black Polished II (IV) ware. The volume contains numerous in-text line drawings and twelve colour and nineteen black and white plates.
