The Carolingian world can be envisaged readily enough by the twentieth century historian: a vast empire covering nearly nine million square kilometers, stretching over fifteen hundred kilometers north to south, from Hamburg to Barcelona, and over twelve hundred kilometers east to west, from Osnabruck to Nantes.

About the author

Pierre Riche is Professor Emeritus of Medieval History at the University of Paris X (Nanterre) and Former Director of the Center for Research in Late Antiquity and the High Middle Ages. He is the author of The Carolingians: A Family Who Forged Europe, also available from the University of Pennsylvania Press.
