About This Item

Postumani; Sesto San Giovanni, Italy, 2009. Softcover. New. 0x0x0. [INTERNET]. De Kerckhove, Derrick. "Dall'alfabeto a internet. L'homme littere: alfabetizzazione, cultura, tecnologia [Italian]." Postumani, Mimesis Edizioni; Sesto San Giovanni, Italy, 2009. Italian language. Softcover. 199 pages. New condition. ISBN: 9788884836755. "Is there a radical difference between oral cultures and written cultures? Are there specific differences between the different types of writing? Can the different types of writing favor the emergence of specific cultural attitudes? Questions of this type, which derive directly from McLuhan's elaboration on the subject of communication and the media, are addressed by Derrick de Kerckhove in this book, with the usual anti-academic attitude but without any concession to the "media coverage" of the problems. We are well aware that the appearance of the Greco-Roman phonetic alphabet favored the emergence, first in the West and then also in the rest of the world, of a new way of thinking about reality, the person and society - and of course living the human experience: the alphabetic man, or “littéré”, as de Kerckhove says with a witty neologism. But which steps were necessary, through which modalities did these transformations emerge? And, for example, how did the first nucleus of self-representation born in the Greek theater evolve to become the modern subject? If man has never ceased to experiment on himself, on his own psyche, the feedback effects of his own inventions, this experimentation has taken different forms according to the communication tools fundamental from time to time in the various civilizations. From the alphabet to the Internet, therefore, there are continuity and discontinuity. But if today we are at the end of the alphabetic man and at the emergence of a new cultural and anthropological formation (which demonstrates that the so-called "human nature" has nothing stable or permanent), this happens because it is language, the tool and the fundamental mediation area between us and the world, which is changing with the advent of the network society. De Kerckhove helps us once again to understand this passage and to orient ourselves in the complexity of contemporary experience.
