On Dec 2 2008, Suddaby said:
I read this book some years ago and decided I wanted to read it again. The author was a professor of English Literature and the main character in the novel is a professor of English at a girls' college.
The book is either autobiographical, or part of the author's daydreams. Anyway, it is a marvellous book that uses more strange language and ideas than any other book I have read. He invents words that sound exactly as they should in the circumstances where he uses them. I hope the book was not autobiographical because Darconville is of such a character that he would be thrown out of most schools. The names of the other characters are marvellous inventions that hopefully could not offend anyone as I could hardle imagine anyone with a name like Hypsipyle Poore or Miss Xystine Chappelle or Mrs. McAwaddle and many more with names that almost describe the person. It is a delight and not surprising that Alexander Theroux is quoted many times in "The Penguin Dictionary of Curious and Interesting Words"
Good reading,
