Autobiographical account by an Arctic explorer, Matthew Henson, his friendship with Robert Peary and their discovery of the North Pole late in the 19th century. First published in 1947 by Robert M McBride & Company in hardcover, this account has a 3rd Introduction by Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Stefansson. Henson was born in 1866 in Maryland and first went to sea at 13, a cabin boy aboard the "Katie Hines". He pleaded to go on meeting Capt. Childs, after walking to Baltimore from Washington D.C. As he learned seamanship, his strength of character, intelligence, and determination won respect among others of courage pursuing distant horizons.
