Brown endpapers, with previous bookseller's sticker on rear endpaper of Volume 1. Complete with 52 engraved plates, color plate in Volume II. Includes 3 folding maps housed in compartments in each volume. Maps all in near fine condition with light splits along seams. (Hosken, 189) An exceptionally bright set. Sir Henry Stanley was famous for his explorations of central Africa. This book recounts his journey to relieve Emin Pasha, the besieged Governor of Equatoria. This book was an international best seller, selling 150,000 copies shortly after publication in 1890.
