1890 1st ed In Darkest Africa Henry Stanley Emin Pasha Expedition Livingstone

"If you have men who will only come if they know there is a good road, I don't want them. I want men who will come if there is no road at all."

― David Livingstone

A rare, first printing of Henry Stanley's 'In Darkest Africa.' Known for his explorations in Africa, he found the Scottish missionary explorer David Livingstone, whom most had assumed had been lost. His acquaintance with continuing expedition with Livingstone led to the expedition for the relief of Emin Pasha, an Ottoman physician. This voyage was notorious for causing the deaths of so many of its members to disease and disaster. The events of this expedition were recorded in Stanley's 'In Darkest Africa' in which he was the leader of the Emin Pasha Relief Expedition.

His best-known, and still widely popular work is his 'Epistles', which was a series of personal letters to other Roman figures. They give an important view of Roman everyday life as well as an interesting perspective on Pliny's views against Christianity. However, the most important epistles concern Pliny's account of the Mount Vesuvius eruption. Tacitus, a friend of Pliny, wanted to know more about the death of his uncle, Pliny the Elder, and the eruption itself. This 1588 first edition was published by Jean Richer and includes a dedicatory epistle from Claude MignaultItem number: #9875Price: $599PLINY the YoungerCai Plinii Secundi Novocomensis, Epistolarum libri decem.
