'Victor Hugo and Emile Girardin trying to raise Prince Louis on a shield... a somewhat shaky affair.'Depcits Hugo and Girardin supporting the election of Prince Louis to the Legislative. This way Hugo facilitated the upcoming seizure of power and proclamation of Louis-Napoleon Bonaparte as president on December 10, 1848. A month before, on November 4, 1848 a section in the Constitution had been changed, guaranteeing freedom of the press. Original lithograph by Honore Daumier published in Paris in December 1848. From a series titled 'Actualities' (News of the Day) which was published in the French magazine 'Le Charivari'.Honore Daumier (1808-1879), was a French printmaker, caricaturist, painter, and sculptor, whose many works offer commentary on social and political life in France in the 19th century.Faint folds as issued, text on the reverse as issued. One foxing spot, faint ink off-setting on left hand side.
